Tonight I took the entire family out to the annual Pasadena ARTWalk. We started at Pasadena City College where we saw art done in crayon, colored pencil, and pen. Next, we went to City Hall and danced to a live music perforance of 60s music. After a fun dance with my sister and son, we found ourselves at the Asia Pacific Museum where we saw Chinese fashion, sculptures, illustrations, advertising, packaging, paintings, graphic design, photography, and houseware. This was the most interesting stop for me as it was the first time studying Chinese art. Our last stop was Pasadena Museum of California Art. This was everyone’s most favorite location by far! This purse pictured above was part of a bigger exhibit that greeted us at the door. This particular piece was my favorite of all the art we saw tonight. Beads, rhinestones, and feathers….I would so wear this purse! While here, we saw interactive art, product (re)designs, digital art, clothes, shoes, packaging, videos, sketches, paintings, and even landscape architecture.
I am thrilled that the kids were exposed to so many different types art. They also learned how to talk about and interpret art. Walking to dinner, we played a game pointing out art in all the things around us. Their education and exposure to art and design this evening was priceless and cost us nothing but quality family time together. A perfect night!
On September 9, the opening day of New York Fashion Week, a group of young Black women staged a silent demonstration. The 20-something ladies wanted to acknowledge the first time in their lifetimes that Essence magazine—a formidable Black women’s print beloved by scores Black girls for 40 years—does not have a Black fashion director. The group of professional and educated women, many of whom are fashion and media insiders, also stood in protest of the added fact that there are no Black fashion directors at any mainstream fashion or lifestyle publication.
Bayyina Black, an organizer and walk participant, explained that the demonstration was bigger than Essence. “On a larger scale, in the year 2010 there is only one woman of color, Nina Garcia, who is a fashion director in the entire fashion industry.”
It is this last line that got my attention. Wow. And Nina Garcia is a Latina women. One has to wonder why that is in the year 2010. I applaud their protest but how does this create actual change? Time will tell. But what it does do is promote awareness. And it certainly has. I had no idea before I read the article. Awareness is the first step towards change.

This is excellent. Innovation brought about by freedom: free of price, free of law protection, simply free. In this 21st century, it is a very novel concept. And is so very disruptive. Only those innovators who will and can capitalize on this revolutionary business model of free will survive.
